Family Favorite Holiday Desserts

I love Christmas baking! When my daughters were little girls we used to make gingerbread men and sugar cookies cutouts. The best part was decorating the cookies! Sprinkles and icing sugar were everywhere but nevertheless we had fun! For Christmas, I also make our traditional family cookies Sicilian Fig Cookies (Cucidati) and Spiced Honey Biscotti (Susamielli - my mother-in-law's recipe).

I love figs and the Cucidati are my all time favorite fig cookies. I usually make a double batch to for holiday gift-giving (actually I eat most of the first batch). The Susamielli are wonderful filled with honey, lemon and orange zests and almonds. Heaven!

Then there are recipes from special friends like Steamed Pumpkin Pudding with Brandy Sauce. This was a recipe that my late best friend Connie used to make every Christmas. Her daughter, Tanya, who is also my goddaughter passed on the recipe to me. I feel privileged to make the Steamed Pumpkin Pudding in loving memory of my dear, dear friend Connie.

Another favorite is Pumpkin Mini Bundt Cakes. These little cakes are delicious just sprinkled with icing sugar or drizzled with Maple Sugar icing. It's also a good way to use any left over pumpkin purée from the Steamed Pumpkin Pudding Recipe.

I love, love the combination of figs and walnuts - add a little cinnamon and lemon zest - well what can I say? Fig and Walnut Mini Loaves are another family favorite. The recipe may change from one year to another by adding a little bit of that or the other, but the they always taste delicious.

And...speaking of fig and walnuts, these Fig and Walnut Biscotti from Sweet Maria's Italian Desserts are just amazing. You have to make them just once and you will be hooked! They make great addition to any cookie tray and are the best for holiday gift-giving.

I have added one more fig cookie recipe to our Favorite Holiday Desserts; Fig Bars from Anita Chu's Field Guide to Cookies are the best fig bars I have tasted. This recipe is one of over 100 delectable cookie recipes from this delightful cookie cookbook. Anita is also the author of the popular and award-winning Web site Dessert First.

One of my favorite cranberry/almond combination is Cranberry Almond Lemon Biscotti. These biscotti are made with almond paste with the addition of lemon zest. They're moist and chewy.

Another great cookie for holiday gift-giving.

This wonderful cranberry dessert, Christmas Tart , is from Sweet Maria's Italian Desserts. This delicious tart is made with a pasta frolla crust filled with a combination of cranberries, walnuts and lemon!

Our Christmas desserts are not complete without chocolate . The best ever recipe for chocolate cake that I have made is the Dark Fudge Bundt Cake from Marcy Goldman's A Passion for Baking. It's simple and quick to make and it tastes sinfully delicious.

This recipe is has been requested for many birthdays and now it's also on our Favorite Holiday Dessert list.

And then there is the traditional Italian Cake. This recipe varies from family to family. We like to eat it plain or filled with a rich chocolate or vanilla pastry cream. This delicious cake is made not only for Christmas but for any celebration.

Our list would not be completed without my good friend Maria's Holiday Spiced Nuts. Pecans and Almonds combined with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are so good you just can't eat one!

To sum up our Family Favorite Desserts List:
There are still a few days left before Christmas so I am sure I will be adding a few more favorite desserts to the list.

We are hosting Christmas Eve and Christmas this year so the next few days will be busy crossing off things to do off the two or three lists I have made while trying to stay calm and sane (maybe a nice glass of vino would help me to stay calm).
